Ports, Drayage and the Industry - Intermodal Logistics Podcast

Written by Kevin Baxter | Dec 12, 2025

The drayage and trucking capacity situation - particularly in California - is a major subplot of increased regulatory enforcement efforts. On this edition of The Intermodal Logistics Podcast, Port X Logistics Founder and CEO Brian Kempisty tells us why there are positives for the industry as a whole when some providers exit.

Brian explains the situation in the nation's biggest freight market - and how cargo theft ties in to general support (at least among a segment of shippers) for some of these efforts, especially with non-domiciled licenses or licenses without drivers' real names. He points out how the combination of these enforcement efforts and overall market conditions have forced out a number of smaller carriers - and how that capacity correction probably continues into the first part of next year.

Speaking of 2026, Brian shares his thoughts on where things are headed after looking back on a "lumpy" 2025. He discusses how homebuilding and the housing market could see a jolt once mortgage rates decline more significantly - which would then also provide a major boost to freight volume.

Also on the episode, we learn more about Brian's background and the founding of Port X in 2017, then we get into the company itself - the areas it covers and services it provides (plus the importance of technology to the company itself and the industry (tied into cargo theft again).

Additionally, we discuss port activity, a surprisingly strong product of late, and the underappreciated advantages of transloading.
