Fresh off the Transportation Intermediaries Association’s Capital Ideas Conference in Phoenix, Chris Burroughs returns to The Intermodal Logistics Podcast to unpack the conversations that are still rippling through the freight market. The TIA President & CEO shares key takeaways from the event, the issues drawing the most attention, and his view of where the industry stands today.
Leading the agenda is cargo theft, a long-standing priority for TIA. Chris outlines tangible progress from FMCSA, the FBI, and Congress to address this persistent risk. He highlights how increased awareness and better technology are improving cargo security, while also noting the ways technology is being used by thieves to stay a step ahead.
Chris also defines “chameleon carriers,” which have drawn more attention recently thanks to media coverage, and details why they pose a serious threat to highway safety. He responds to a recent CBS Sunday Morning segment that, in his view, unfairly called out C.H. Robinson, and underscores how complex safe carrier verification really is, and where additional government support is needed.
From there, Chris breaks down the major issue on many TIA members’ minds featured in that same report: the Montgomery case in front of the U.S. Supreme Court. He explains how the pending ruling could reshape liability exposure for brokers in accidents involving the carriers they select. To close, the conversation turns to AI’s growing presence in transportation, and we even manage to work in a reference to the wine country romp, Sideways.
