The more data the better is a phrase to live by in business. And one way those in transportation can gain more data about their shipments takes the spotlight of this episode of The Intermodal Logistics Podcast. RFID technology has been around in some form or fashion for quite awhile, but Powercast Director of Strategic Partnerships Eric Biel explains how his company is taking its freight use - particularly for temperature-monitoring applications - up a notch.
Eric discusses how both purpose-built and modified RFID tags - known as RAIN RFID - can offer granular, real-time data on temperature, humidity and more for products like food, beverages and pharmaceuticals which require a consistent cold chain. He points out how these small sensors can travel with loads and store considerable data - whether they're powered or unpowered. And with food and drug categories, the data helps not only for compliance, but for determining safety for consumption - as some products spoil when the temperature spikes or dips.
All it takes is a simple scan. Beyond temp-control though, warehouse applications are another supply chain case for RFIDs. Eric tells us how powered tags with LED indicators make it easy to find products in warehouses and distribution centers, and with that power, the range for a scanner to find a tag increases. Additionally, he explains how Powercast has developed technology to power these tags without batteries, instead using ambient electricity to wirelessly charge them - a technology that's also made its way into television remotes and other items.
