As international trade regulations shift and sustainability priorities evolve, two pillars of freight management - global policy and environmental initiatives - have become anything but predictable. On this edition of The Intermodal Logistics Podcast, we unpack the findings from two recent Sphera-commissioned surveys spotlighting the realities logistics leaders face today: one addressing the disruption caused by emerging trade policies, the other examining the importance of sustainability to (some) businesses as government incentives ebb and flow.
Scott Lehmann, Sphera’s VP of Product Development, walks us through the survey insights, providing valuable context around both topics. From the effects of new trade policy results, the most striking takeaway: nearly 75% of businesses reported supplier disruptions leading to revenue loss this year, with 25% calling those cost setbacks “significant.” Scott discusses how forward-thinking companies are responding - leveraging AI to address both real-time challenges and strategize for the future.
On the sustainability side, Scott notes respondents now fall into three distinct groups: those continuing to lead the charge, those complying when necessary (and now backing off) based on outside pressure, and those using the changing environment to pause to re-evaluate their approach. For all of them, he points out it's an opportunity to align sustainability with overall business efforts. The good news: when thoughtfully planned - especially in transportation - sustainability, service quality, and cost savings don’t have to compete; they can work together to drive business value and operational resilience.
